What To See And Do In Deception Island

March 28, 2017

What To See And Do In Deception IslandWhat to you see and do in one of the most intriguing islands on the planet, which happens to be in Antarctica... It's fairly popular for tourists because of sites like Whalers Bay, Telefon Bay, Baily Head and Pendulum Cove. At these spots tourists can learn about geothermal activities, science and interesting facts about Antarctica.

Whalers Bay

Located on the east side of the island, the bay got its name because of the whalers that used to frequent here. It was designated as a Historic Site or Monument. There are many different artifacts to view here from the early whaling period. Visitors can also see a cemetery that also acts as a memorial for 10 men that were lost at sea.

Pendulum cove

Located on the north-east side of Deception Island, the cove got its name from Henry Foster, in 1829, who made pendulum and magnetic observations. Volcano and meteorology research took place at the cove, which first opened in 1955. It was destroyed by an eruption of a volcano in 1967 and 1969. The ruins of the onsite research station have been designated a Historic Site or Monument. Parts of the cove form an Antarctic Specially Protected Area which consist of sites that have been designated for their ecological and botanic value.

Baily Head

Located as the easternmost part of Deception Island, Baily Head is home to thousands, if not millions, of birds. There are thought to be 100,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins located in this area. Other birds located here include snowy sheath bills and brown skuas. Another interesting animal, the fur seal, is often seen hanging out on the black sand of the beach. Other animals that have been spotted here includes leopards, crab eaters and elephant seals.

Telefon Bay

Located on the north-west coast of the island, the bay is part of the Antarctic Specially Protected Area as well. Telefon Bay features many craters and rocks that seem to have the shape of penguins, with a few of them looking as if the face of a penguin was actually carved into them. One of the more interesting things to see here is the water. It is somewhat heated because of the active volcano and you can see bubbles from the volcano come up through the water. The landscape of the area seems to be ever changing for the curious tourist that likes to wander about as you can see everything from lava, to ash, to clean snow.
